The History of the Scheme
The Crossroads organisation was originally set up as a result of a story line in the programme Crossroads, which followed a story line about the problems encountered by a young disabled man living with his mother, and particularly focused on the strain and tiredness experienced by the mother as a result of the constant demands of her caring role.  This provoked a large public response and people demanded to know why no such scheme existed.

When the programme came to an end, ATV gave a grant of £10,000 to set up the first pilot scheme for respite caring the home.  Two years later, 28 families were receiving help from a Crossroads Scheme, now this has expanded even further and there are schemes up and down the country.
